Empowering Monday | Hydration Is Care, Too 💧

Summer is reminding us that it's not finished yet—and this season has brought record-high heat along with devastating storm destruction in many communities.

Between dangerous temperatures across the country and severe storms that have damaged homes, disrupted power, and displaced families, hydration definitely has an important place in our caregiving plans.

And that means remembering two people: the person we're caring for and ourselves.

Mimi isn't a big water drinker in her older age, so I've learned to get creative. Instead of repeatedly telling her, "You need to drink some water," I'll turn hydration into an actual taste-testing game.

I might put several options in front of her—water, coconut water, an electrolyte drink—and we taste them together.

Which one tastes better?

Can you take three sips of this one?

Which one would you drink more of?

Suddenly, we're not battling over a water bottle. She's participating, making choices, and we're working toward her hydration goals while maintaining her dignity and independence.

It's not always easy, but sometimes creativity works much better than frustration.

And caregivers, while you're keeping track of everyone else's needs—don't forget your own hydration too!

One important reminder: hydration needs aren't one-size-fits-all. Some medical conditions or medications may require fluid restrictions, so always follow your loved one's healthcare guidance.

If you're struggling to encourage your loved one to stay hydrated—or could use practical ideas for making everyday caregiving a little less frustrating—let's connect. Empower2Care can help you find approaches that work for both of you.

Stay cool. Stay safe. Stay hydrated. 💙💧
